Brief History
and facts: CHRISC Tanzania
CHRISC was
introduced in Mbulu in Tanzania by youth from KRIK Sotra in 1995. Mbulu was
followed by Arusha (1999), Mwanza (2003), Dar Es Salaam(2003), Tanga (2003), Zanzibar(2003),
Mbeya(2005) and Moshi(June 2006).
MBULU
The sport
project was brought to Mbulu in 1995. Today the local groups are using most
volleyball, but also some football. The work in Mbulu is today growing, and they
have 20 parishes with teams of two kinds: Football and Volleyball. They aimed to
teach in youth work, HIV/AIDS, drugs abuse and other teachings which are
conducted with prayers and testimonies. It is 250 CHRISC participants in Mbulu.
ARUSHA
CHRISC in
Arusha started in 1999 by Andrew William Kajembe, that met young KRIK members
from Norway while he was visiting Uganda. He wanted to spread the evangelism
through sports in Tanzania, but had also the aim of using sports as a tool for
community development and HIV/AIDS in formation /education and also to empower
youth in the Christian faith. CHRISC Arusha is today the biggest CHRISC district
in Tanzania. They have workshops for the members with topics of HIV/Aids,
leadership, micro finance and Bible teaching. CHRISC Arusha is a well organized
district with activities in 4 different zones. They have 180 Youth teams, in
categories of Boys and Girls U-16, U-14, and U-12. This brings around 2700
members to CHRISC in Arusha.
MWANZA
CHRISC was
brought to Mwanza by Student KRIK Stavanger in 2003. In Mwanza Christian Sports
Contact deals with youth mostly from poor families. Up to now CHRISC Mwanza have
attracted many youth, and have established 4 zones with activities in Mwanza.
Today youths in Mwanza have increasingly started sharing their personal
experiences and helping each other. CHRISC Mwanza is now working mainly on
achieving its goals and objectives of developing sports and community
development activities which will create an environment of evangelism and
spreading the word of God, which will enable us to win people for CHRIST. The
total number members of registration (boys and girls) is 1760.
DAR ES SALAAM
CHRISC-Dar Es
Salaam district started in March, 2003 and by today some tremendous sign of
achievement has been spotted to this concept of sports and evangelism. In which
more church leaders are now encouraging and allow their young people to
participate in evangelism through sports. CHRISC Dar Es Salaam has a cooperation
with Global KRIK Bergen. CHRISC-Dar has 1500 members of both
sexes and different ethnic and religious back ground, who are drawn from 4 zones
- namely Ilala, Ukonga, Ubungo and Goba.
TANGA
Started in
2003 in Tanga Tanga had visitors from Norway in June 2005, and the
district had a democratic election of a Board. The activities are growing. The
National Camp for CHRISC in Tanzania was held in Tanga in Desember 2005 550
participants attended the camp, that was successful. Up to date sports programme
has 1170 youth members of both
sexes of different ethnic and religious back grounds
ZANZIBAR
Zanzibar
started in 2003. In Zanzibar CHRISC was introduced by Brother James Kaleza who
was the then chairperson of the Anglican Youth Organisation in the Eastern &
Costal Zone. Zanzibar District started with 19 participants from all Christian
denominations in Zanzibar in the Unguja Island. Today this district has 454
participants from the following 4 Christian denominations. Roman Catholic,
Lutheran Church, ACT Zanzibar and Pentecostal Church Kwahani. CHRISC Zanzibar
has a collaboration with Global KRIK Bergen.
Moshi
Moshi had leadership seminars
in February 2006, and hopefully this will give activities when after some
months.
Mbeya
Will start activities in 2006
Up to date
Sports programme has more than 7834 members of both sexes, of different ethnic
and religious back grounds and different abilities in the region.
