Introduction
In January
2004 KRIK-Trondheim visited ACROSS in Yei for the first time. There was a
meeting with the pastors in different churches and a one day seminar,
introducing CHRISC to the youth. The team left some balls to be distributed to
local groups as they forms.
Yei
ACROSS
(“Partners with the Sudanese”) is a local NGO working with the Sudanese, which
have worked in the south of Sudanese since 1972.They work mainly with and trough
the local churches, and their main objective is investing in people through
training. The Stromme Foundation told them about CHRISC some years ago, and
since they considered that the CHRISC program could have a beneficial effect and
be easily implemented in their already existing youth program, KRIK was invited
to introduce this to the local churches in Yei.

teams in Yei

Eight
groups were formed after the last visit; all except NSHC arrange training
sessions regular. The team visited five churches. To get an impression of how
CHRISC is doing in Yei, it is recommended to read the reports from Jeddidah.
African Inland Church, AIC, Mike’s church, has a volleyball court outside the
church, have regular training sessions and a few girls playing. Most youths.
Church of God, CoG, not far from AIC. They play football twice a week with
Kamau Joseph. The field is the courtyard between the church buildings. Younger kids
attend to this. Evangelic Lutheran Church, ELC, Moses and Isaac’s church, has a
big field outside the church and want to extend it, if allowed. Plays almost
everyday and

kids from the age of
eight are allowed to participate Gospel Apostolic Church, GAC, has a volleyball
field outside the church. Military, very high boys, many of the participants are
not a member of the church; some problem with discipline. Borrows a poor
volleyball from ACROSS. Sudan Pentecostal Church, SPC, plays football on a field
five minutes walk from the church; the field needs to be cleared. Kids from the
age of eight are playing, and a pastor helps with devotion.
The youths
in Yei do not have the opportunity to watch sport on television, so they have
not seen how volleyball or football is played for real. We used a lot of time to
explain the rules in volleyball, rotation and three touches. And Kamau will
teach offside in football. The basic knowledge we taught, will hopefully be
adopted by the teams, and give a better opportunity to teach skills and
exercises next visit.
Summary
The
situation in Yei makes it a bit challenging for the youth themselves to found
for equipment. But some groups succeed, and can be used as example for the other
groups. Ezra Weleya, education coordinator in Stromme, told us that the youth in
Sudan need some time, but they will become independent from NGOs. He believes
that CHRISC has a great future in South Sudan, and encourage us to think big.
CHRISC in Yei has achieved very much in six months, still they need our support
possible. The support from Jeddidah and Onesimus at ACROSS unite and inspire the
different groups. By giving reports to the youth department, the groups have to
evaluate and improve their activity.
